Media Overview: High Tea Society is a website and social media community about high tea. Articles include: high tea reviews, what to wear to high tea and tea ware design. The website has a directory of over 100 venues in Australia that serve high tea.
What is your experience and background? I have worked on digital media projects since the early days of the internet in the mid 1990’s, in both Australia and the UK. As a consultant I have managed the marketing communications for a number of digital media brands and decided it was time to put all my experience towards my own project.
How and why did you start High Tea Society? I have always loved going for high tea. I started out with a blog as a place to test out what works with digital and social media content. In the early days of my career I worked as a photographer, graphic designer and PR consultant, together with all I know about digital and social media these skills have all been very useful in creating rich content to wet the appetite of the eager and active community of fans. In May 2010 we re-launched with new branding and a new website that offered addition features including the email newsletter.
Now with over 5,000 followers across the email newsletter, Facebook and Twitter profiles. High Tea Society is regularly appearing in the top three results for the “high tea” search on Google.
The audience is niche and committed – they love to refer on articles and like images on Facebook, so there is a strong viral affect.
What features & benefits do you offer advertisers? The most effective package is to sponsor a competition giveaway, as competitions are supported with a social media campaign to the 5,000 followers. Competitions are archived on the website after the competition period, so offer good search engine results in to the future. At the end of a competition we provide a report on the effectiveness. Some of our more popular competitions have received over 2,000 page views and over 200 post comments, during the two week competition period.
The website and email newsletter also offer banner advertising.
Please outline your sales structure? We sell the sponsorship and website advertising space directly. Advertisers have included: venues and hotels who serve high tea, tea and coffee brands, tea ware and fashion brands.
What advice would you offer to anyone thinking of starting a commercial media business? Have a unique proposition and do it well.
Where do you get your business information from? I attend a lot of digital media industry events, so I have learnt a lot by talking to others. Also industry specific magazines and websites, blogs & social networks
