Tell us about What's on Sydney?
Our primary business is www.whatsonsydney.com. It has been live now for over eight years and in that time we have built up knowledge around running a successful online business, the entertainment industry and social media. When I started it I knew nothing so it has been an amazing journey. Very early on I set up the goal to be the number one website for Sydneysiders to find out what was on in Sydney. I also wanted to support the entertainment industry by giving them a site where they could promote for little or no cost.
How and why did you start What's on Sydney?
I started it because the URL was available and I couldn’t find out what was on in Sydney.
What features & benefits do you offer advertisers?
We are very flexible with timings, split campaigns etc. We don’t have a lead time so if you want an ad up today as long as we have the space we can do it. We keep our ad rates as low as possible, to support the entertainment industry. People who want to advertise with us outside of events can but the cost is a little higher.
Can you outline the good and the bad about being an independent
media business?
The good this is that you can keep rates low, the bad thing I am not sure!
Please outline your sales structure?
At the moment I do it all. Most people come to me and repeat business is very high, so I don’t have to do too much ‘selling’.
What tips can you offer when dealing with advertisers?
I have noticed that agencies don’t like to tell you who their client is that they are inquiring for. This can be a disadvantage. For example we might be offer them more than just banner advertising if the client fits well with something else that we do.
What advice would you offer to anyone thinking of starting a commercial media business?
If it is something that you are really passionate about, even if you have never done it before, just go for it!
Where do you get your business information from?
Recently, from itunes I have been listening to a number of podcasts, the latest is Red Tent Radio which is a great resource for women in business.
